People claiming to be from the Department of Housing set up camp in Kliptown the whole of last week. The purpose of their presence there was to register people for RDP houses and for those who have already registered to verify their registration status. The same is happening at Freedom Park this week.
Leaders in some of the communities are not very pleased with how this is being conducted. "I didn't go to verify my registration status", said Sandile Mqhayi of Kliptown, "as per our last meeting with the MMC for Housing, we are still waiting for him to come address us on several issues that we raised with him." A few households within the Kliptown were relocated to a block of flats near the Pimville Gold Course but that came to a halt and the community requested clarity on how that process was formulated and how it was supposed to unfold.
Peter Molete of Freedom Park also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that this was happening instead of what the communities asked for, for example the Freedom Park community is waiting for feedback regarding a survey of the land that they have occupied. He also mentioned that the people involved in facilitating this drive seem to be SANCO people specifically and not regular community people.
